The Bharatha people trace their origins to Tamil-speaking Paravar fishermen from Southern India who arrived in 1415, breaking the Arab monopoly on the pearl trade. Shaped by Portuguese Catholic missionaries in the 16th century, they built communities along Sri Lanka's western coast — in Mannar, Negombo, and Colombo. The Negombo Bharatha Association, founded in 1937 under Nicholas Emmanuel De Croos, gave this community a unified voice — and in 2025, we proudly mark our centenary.
